I never take an assignment for granted, and try my best to make the best photos that i possibly can, but sometimes, there are hurdles that i find it hard to overcame. This year there were three concerts that really put me to the test.
The First one was Lee Perry. He was the top name for this year festival and was closing the Castle. He went on and after a some minutes i knew it was going to be a problem.
He had a cap that obscured his face, and kept the microphone in front of it all the time. I thought “damn, how i’m i supposed to get a picture where we can actually see his face ???”
I spend almost the entire concert trying to get something more than an cap obscured face, because i knew that the media would want a photo of him the next day. I managed to get some decent photos of him, but it was a not an enjoyable experience.
Nunca encaro de uma forma ligeira cada reportagem que faço, dou sempre o meu melhor por forma a conseguir fazer as melhores fotografias possíveis, mas por vezes há obstáculos difíceis de ultrapassar. No festival deste ano, senti muitas dificuldades em três concertos.
O primeiro foi o de Lee Perry. Era o nome principal do cartaz deste ano na noite de encerramento do Castelo, ao fim de alguns minutos de concerto soube que ia ter um grande problema. Na sua fatiota bastante exótica, o chapéu tapava-lhe a cara, claro que o facto de ter sempre o microfone é frente da boca também não ajudava muito. O meu pensamento nessa altura foi: “Como é que vou tirar uma fotografia em que se veja claramente a cara dele ???“.
Passei quase todo o concerto a tentar tirar-lhe uma fotografia que lhe mostrasse os olhos e a cara, já que sabia que ia ser uma imagem que os media iriam querer no dia seguinte. Acabei por conseguir algumas fotografias razoáveis, mas suei bastante para o conseguir!
James Blood Ulmer was a another case of “hiding behind those dreadful microphone and music stands”. He was alone on stage, so there where many choices of environmental portraits, but it was near impossible to get a clear shot of him with the guitar or just the guitar. I made some interesting ones, but wished he was there without all that stuff in front of him.
O concerto de James Blood Ulmer foi mais um caso de “stands de pautas e microfones à frente do assunto”. Estava sozinho no palco, pelo que foi relativamente fácil conseguir alguns retratos ambientais, mas faltavam imagens de corpo inteiro dele e da guitarra. Com tudo o que ele tinha à frente, isso era práticamente impossível dos ângulos onde me conseguia colocar. Fiz algumas fotos interessantes, mas gostava que todos aqueles adereços não estivessem ali.

Orquestra Típica Fernández Fierro was the most daring concert i photographed in this year FMM, the lights were almost all from the back, very strong and changing in seconds. I’m sure the audience was thrilled with the show, but for me it was a concert that i was constantly trying to get mote than silhouettes of the musicians! This was the only concert that i really don’t remember the music so busy i was during the whole concert.

Ah, as maravilhas dos contra luzes brutais permanentes, acompanhados por banhos de luzes azuis e vermelhas daquele tipo que os sensores das cameras adoram! A Orquestra Típica Fernández Fierro, foi o concerto que me fez suar mais este ano, Os contra luzes muito intensos e intermitentes não dando quase tempo para enquadrar e obter algo mais do que uma silhueta, foram uma constante durante todo o concerto. Embora tenha a certeza que para o público foi um concerto muito motivador, não em lembro de uma única música, tão ocupado que estava na tarefa de conseguir fotografias decentes!
